Weather forecasts should take wind movement into account

The interaction between the heat from the sun and the earth's atmosphere is greatly responsible for the weather of the world. The unequal heating of the earth and the atmosphere's tendency to reach equilibrium forces the movement of large mass of air. This causes changes in the weather condition. The tilt in the earth's axis causes the seasonal variations as different parts of the earth receives varied amount of the sunrays everyday. The Tropical Zone between 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south receives maximum heat throughout the year. This effects convection. This convection causes the hot air to rise up, form a low pressure and come down again as rainfall. Until it reaches the tropopause (the juncture of the stratosphere and the troposphere) the hot air keeps moving up. It cannot cross the tropopause. It spreads towards the pole and then cools and sinks down generally in between the 30 degrees north and south. The sinking air produces a high pressure belt which causes dry and sunny climate. The deserts on the earth are located mostly in these zones. In the zone between the 30 degrees north and south latitudes the sinking air displaces a considerable mass of air that was already there. Some of it moves towards the equatorial area as trade winds. By the time it reaches the equator, it dies out and this was called the doldrums by sailors. Thus we can see that the global circulation of air is to a large extent a cause of the rise of air in the tropics, sinking of the same in between the 30 degrees north and south latitude and also the eventual flowing back of it to the equator. This whole process was first observed by English scientist George Hadley and thus it gets its name as the Hadley cells. The whole of the rising equatorial wind do not sink in the 30 degrees' zone. Some continues to flow till they reach the poles. They meet the polar air at 60 degrees north and south. This zone is called the polar fronts. From here the warmer air moves towards the 30 degrees' area and this was first observed by William Ferrel in 1856. Thus this process earns its name: the Ferrel cells. There are some air that rises at the 60 degree and flows towards the 60 degrees north and south zone. This is quite a weak process and is popularly called the polar Hadley cells.

Florida schools get great ap grades

The national College Board’s 2007Advanced Placement Report to the Nation brought good news to Florida Schools. Findings from the organization reported overall improvements for high schools students achieving high rated Advanced Placement test scores. Nationally, 14.8% of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams scored a 3 or higher in 2006, up 14.1% from 2005. Educators in the Florida Schools viewed this report with interest for a couple of reasons. First of all, Florida Schools are interested in the accompanying study that reports a strong correlation between students who take AP courses in high school and experience academic success in college. Secondly, Florida Schools ranked well in most areas of the report. Florida Schools ranked 7th in the nation for states with the largest percentage of seniors scoring a 3 or better on their AP exams. 19.8% of AP students in the Florida Schools achieved this goal. Top scorer New York State had 22.7% of its AP students in this upper echelon. Florida Schools also were in the top five states to show the most improvement in AP scores between 2000 and 2006. Finally, the College Board recognized Florida Schools as one of the top achievers in eliminating equity gaps of Latino students. This means that the percentage of Latino students represented in Florida Schools has increased in relation to their overall percentage of attendance. According to College Board President Gaston Caperton, “Florida is one state that has dramatically expanded AP participation and improved performance among Latino students. In Florida, the percentage of AP students who are Latino actually exceeds the percentage of students that are Latino in the population.” State funding is used to give Florida Schools professional teacher development. And the Florida Schools use PSAT/NSMQT scores to identify potentially successful AP students. Finally, Florida Schools awards educators for high student achievement on the AP exams. Along with California, New York, and Texas, the Florida Schools have more schools cited in the report than any other states. Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Florida and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia received the most mentions of all high schools in the nation. Despite on-going challenges to meet the needs of a state full of diversity and challenges, Florida Schools are clearly making strides towards their goals. Florida Schools participate in the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® which allows high students to take college level courses. Administrators in Florida Schools say that those students participating the AP courses not only do better in college, but also end up taking more credit hours in their major course of study. In addition to Sunshine State standards and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), Florida Schools are trying to increase the number of its students attending four-year college and completing the degree in that timeframe.

Tropical rain forest biome

The tropical biome is an ecosystem unique to areas around the earth’s equator. Parts of South America, South Africa and Southeast Asia are areas most commonly identified as tropical rainforest biomes. These unusual biomes are home to plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. This is the fact that makes them very unique. In fact, most plants and animals in rainforest biomes are unable to live outside a ‘captive’ environment in other parts of the world. For example, most of our household plants come from tropical rainforest biomes, and would not survive on their own outside the captivity and almost constant attention available in a house or building. Rainforest biomes are protected by a 250 foot canopy of tree tops that allow very little sunlight to filter through. Vines typically grow up and around tree trunks under the canopy reaching for sunlight, and smaller trees and plants, ferns and palms—that do not require direct sunlight—grow on the ground under the canopy. However, the ground is free of grasses and small plants because no sunlight is available. Decayed plant material and microorganisms thrive in the hot moist environment on the rainforest floor. Tropical rainforests see from 60 to 160 inches of rainfall a year, and it’s fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. Since there isn’t a ‘rainy season’ plants and animals in rainforests can depend on a constant source of moisture. Temperature ranges from 68˙F to 93˙F and humidity is a constant 77-88˙. The value of rainforests to humankind is undeniable. Many plant species are used to produce medicines for human consumption. Forty per cent of Earth’s oxygen is produced by tropical rainforests. However, tropical rainforest biomes have been reduced to less than 6% of earth’s land surface. We need to rethink our tacit agreement to the destruction of this vital resource.

Transforming ohio schools

Ohio Public Schools have undergone significant changes since 2004 due to the Ohio High School Transformation Initiative (OHSTI). This is a plan that replaced the Ohio Schools’ massive and ineffective high schools with almost 60 smaller schools. The funding for this effort came from a number of both government and private sponsors. The Problems with Ohio Schools Ohio Schools are not in good shape. According to information from one of the supporting partners, Knowledge Works, only 32% of graduates from the Ohio Schools are ready for college after graduation, only 70% graduate, and only 30% will receive a bachelor’s degree within ten years. In addition, the racial gap is alarming. Only 12% of African-American and Hispanic students are considered college ready. This ranks Ohio Schools as the second lowest in the nation for this measurement. But the problems within the Ohio Schools don’t stop there. In the large Ohio Schools attendance was poor, high school students were not engaged in learning, and the expectations were low. A Possible Solution for Ohio Schools The OHSTI has been described as “one of the nation’s most aggressive school improvement efforts.” It doesn’t hurt that the initiative has the backing of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In fact, the initiative was largely spurred by Bill Gates’ assertion that American schools are in a crisis state, and that smaller schools have more to offer. In June of 2007 the Ohio Schools received $7.4 million to strengthen the OHSTI. Here’s why. Numerous studies over the past 3 decades have found that students in smaller schools exhibit better grades, increased college enrollment, better attendance, and a better sense of belonging, safety, and security. All were missing factors for a large number of students in the larger Ohio Schools. The smaller sized Ohio Schools are showing success with the new high school model by doing a number of things differently. Ohio Schools can now focus on individual learning styles and multiple intelligences; both pedagogical methods proven to increase student achievement. Students in small Ohio Schools also focus on a specific major, like business or languages, which makes learning more relevant. Finally, students participate in real world activities that require teamwork and higher level thinking skills, rather than the traditional “lecture and regurgitation” method. Funding for Ohio Schools Since 2004 the Knowledge Works Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, along with the Ohio and US Departments of Education, and local organizations have funded 58 small Ohio Schools. The small schools are showing improvements. But the nation will watch Ohio Schools closely to see if funding, improvements, and government support for the program continues. Private funding for public schools has become a national trend that many think may be the solution to public school woes.

How to develop effective training content

Unless you’re teaching others how to use software, there’s a good chance you’ll need a customized training solution. That’s because with something like software, each keystroke has a predetermined result and therefore users need only understand which keys to push and when. Although time-consuming, developing training content of this nature is fairly straightforward. But the same can’t be said about teaching your employees how to run your business the way you want it run. If it was your job to develop effective training content, would you know how to do it? Would you know what not to do? Don’t worry. Most people who don’t develop training content for a living wouldn’t know these answers, either. Before you start spending money developing training content, there are a few training content “pre-development” questions that should be answered first such as: Who is your target audience? You might at first think this question is better suited to developing marketing materials not training materials, but think again. As with marketing materials, the message your training materials deliver has to resonate with your market which in this case is your trainees. Otherwise it will fall on deaf ears. So now you need to answer these questions: Who will be using the training materials being developed? For example, will the materials be developed for a particular department or for a particular branch? How many people will be trained during each training session? What is the skill level of and what motivates the group to be trained? With a clear definition of your target “trainee” it’s time to answer another important question: What are your training goals? For example, is training required to help meet certain sales quotas? Is training required so that your employees are in compliance with certain regulations? Do you hope that those who complete your training emerge with a new or improved set of skills? Once you have a firm understanding of who you need to train and why he or she needs to be trained, you’ll be better prepared to move on to the next area of consideration, the planning stage. During this stage you want to get a better idea of when (or how often) such training will take place and where it will take place. Knowing these answers is going to help determine the most effective method of material delivery. And now, the big question you need to address is: How can I get my audience from where it is now to where I need it to be within my defined timeframe? At this stage you’ll need to start thinking about a realistic training budget. You need to know how much you can afford to spend on developing as well as implementing a training program. This answer will significantly impact the development stage. When it comes to delivering your training content, you have many options. You can develop a “hands-on” training course that can be used in an interactive classroom-type setting. You can develop an entire training course on video or that can be delivered electronically, both of which allow trainees to learn at an individualized pace. You can develop slide shows, hand-outs, webinars, group or individual activities, and more. If you plan on developing effective training content you really do need to take all of these issues into consideration. But the process doesn’t stop there. You’ve also got to implement the training program and then evaluate it. Here is where you’ll answer what is probably the most important question. Was the developed training program effective at meeting the goals and objectives outlined previously? Hopefully the answer is YES!

How can a teacher manage to find time during the day to get things done? In providing teacher time management training for school districts, I recognize that using time management in education at the teacher level is difficult because you face unique challenges: Your time is booked every day. There is no leeway in altering a class schedule, so you must work within the very limited planning periods. An important component of your job is to be available for students and parents beyond the actual classroom sessions. One very effective method for teachers to save time is to group activities as much as possible. With this process you can use to maximize those all-too-short blocks of time so that you can lessen the amount of work you drag home every evening. You are four times more productive when you can focus on one type of task rather than switching back and forth among assorted tasks. Constant multitasking slows you down. While you can never eliminate all of the interruptions in your day because you do need to be responsive to students, make the best use of the short periods of time that you do have. What activities are effective when grouped? Telephone: Set aside a time when you will make and return nonurgent phone calls. It might be fifteen minutes in the morning and another fifteen minutes in the afternoon. Work toward keeping routine calls within that block. Email: Electronic messages can easily dominate your day. Turn off the sound or alert that advises you of incoming messag3es. Just as with telephone calls, set a block of time each day when you focus on just your email. Discussions: If you confer several times a day with certain colleagues, set up a folder and collect items during the day so that you can cover all points during just one meeting. This limits interruptions for both of you. Encourage others to have a folder for you also. Reading: For articles and publications that do not have an action date, keep them together and schedule time on your calendar to catch up on the reading. This reading block can include both paper and electronic information. Filing: Even if you have a terrific filing system and you know where to put all your reference papers, do not stop and file each individual item as it comes in. Wait until you have a folder of papers, and then note on your calendar when you will file.
